David Keeler
David Keeler (not to be confused with Dave the Lollipop) is a museum curator who lived seven generations after the Transcendence era in the 2200s.[1] He is most well-known as one of the original owners of the Car.
Personality
David is a solitary person by nature, and dislikes large crowds. He enjoys cooking as well as engaging in philosophical and scientific discussions.[1] He is also very skilled with magic and knows next to nothing about cars.[2][3]
Abilities
David has an aural version of the Sight that allows him to detect magical currents and (to a limited extent) other people's emotions. He can also shoot lightning bolts, although this is a learned skill and not an innate one.[1]
History
David was born in the early 2200s.[4] He grew up in a small BC town that was home to hundreds of local deities and spirits, and so learned how to respect them early on in his life, despite the fact that his father was a bitter atheist.[5]
He met Sarah Pines while attending university in Vancouver, where he majored in archaeology with a minor in magical dynamics. After graduation, he received a job offer to work as curator of magical artifacts at the Gravity Falls museum. When Sarah received a similar offer from her fifth cousin Isa to work as a research librarian at the Stanley Pines Memorial Library, they decided to save on costs by moving down to Gravity Falls together and being roommates. They eventually purchased an (extremely cursed) plot of land together and ended up razing the existing house to the ground and building their own. They put both their names on the lease.[1]
Shortly after moving to Gravity Falls, on a picking expedition, both David and Sarah ran into the minor demon Necalitz. David managed to beat him back into the Mindscape with a cursed golden idol of Bill Cipher. This started a blood feud between them and the demon, and so every year or so, whenever he managed to drag himself back into the physical world, David and Sarah would track him down and beat him into the Mindscape again. This hobby of theirs would eventually get them officially classified as demons of unknown power levels.[6]
Later, they were kidnapped by a cultand subsequently rescued by Alcor the Dreambender. Forever after that day, David took a portion of everything he baked down to the local temple of the Circle of the Dreamer's Star as a sacrifice. Likewise, after his initial summoning, Alcor continued to pop in and out of their lives, mostly so Sarah could ask him questions about family history.[1]
Roughly six years after they initially moved to Gravity Falls together, David and Sarah's house was overtaken by Yggdrasil. This eventually led to the discovery of how to grow it in a laboratory, which made it significantly less valuable.[7] In 2237, they discovered that some of the leftover Yggdrasil from the overtaken-house incident had sprouted an inter-dimensional portal that led to other dimensions and time periods.[4]
Twelve years after they move to Gravity Falls, David's niece and Sarah's nephew come up to spend the summer with them. It is implied that they may be the reincarnations of people Dipper knew during the Transcendence era.[1]
Relationships
Sarah Pines
Sarah is David's best friend. They are common-law married and share a mortgage together. However, their relationship is strictly platonic.
The Car
The Car is a gray SUV that both David and Sarah keep kicking through the liberal application of wards, hexes, and charms. When it misbehaves, either Sarah or David threaten it with a tire iron, axe, or belt sander. At one point, they perform a necromantic ritual on the Car, which does a good deal in allowing it to achieve sentience. After Sarah and David's deaths, the Car remains terrified of all their future reincarnations.[2]
Cats
David and Sarah own at least seven cats[3]:
- Mooch - a black cat that teleported into their car and refused to leave
- Blink - a black and white patch cat, and Mooch's offspring
- Terror - a fluffy brown tabby with exceptionally powerful teleportation abilities he almost never uses
- Smoke - a gray Egyptian Mau
- Char - a dark brown Burmese
- Skitz - a brown and white tabby with a shredded ear
- Mango - an orange Abyssian
Trivia
- He and Sarah often go on "picking expeditions" around the globe, in which they search for historical and magical objects. Through these expeditions, they have come into possession of Hank Pines's enchanted cane, a few heirloom Pines family fezzes, and (albeit briefly) a cursed golden idol of Bill Cipher.[1]
- The teenagers of Gravity Falls have a tradition to egg Sarah and David's house every year on Halloween.[8]
