Arnold Corduroy

Arnold Corduroy is Henry Pines's father. He and Henry are estranged, due to Arnold's abusive parenting.

Appearance

Arnold is a very large man and larger in build than even his brother Manly Dan. At a couple inches shorter than Henry, he would be roughly 6'5 tall. He has thick curly red hair and a large beard, and his nose and eyes are bloodshot from years of drinking. He frequently wears overalls, but when he's trying to make a good impression, he may wear a polo shirt underneath.

Personality

Arnold Corduroy is an extremely traditional man, with very set views on what is and is not appropriate behavior for men and women. He is extremely against reading, believing it to be emasculating, and believes a real man should spend their days chopping down trees, chasing tail, fighting, and drinking. He also frequently uses homophobic slurs against people who don't match up to these expectations.

He is also a Pro-nat.

History

While his son Henry was growing up, Arnold would frequently tear books out of his hand and berate him for spending too much time on his homework. He also taught Henry how to fish and chop wood. When Henry was seven years old, he found a stray kitten and took it home with him. When Arnold found it in the living room, he threw the kitten in a lake and beat Henry.

The first time Arnold met Mabel was two months before she and Henry got married. It ended with Mabel threatening to take her bat to Arnold's prized pickup truck. Arnold attempted to hit Mabel in the face, but Henry stopped him and banned him from the Shack permanently. It was a result of this fight that prompted Henry to take Mabel's last name. Arnold and Rita were not invited to the wedding, nor were either present at the birth of their grandchildren Acacia, Hank, and Willow.

After the triplets were born, Henry and Arnold did not speak for sixteen years.

However, when the triplets were sixteen, Arnold and Rita plotted to gain custody of them in order to have some help around the house. They were found out by the Woodsman, who invaded their dreams, and cut off their hands. Because this event happened psychically, neither Rita nor Arnold lost their hands physically. Instead, this experience left both of them with a pair of scars along their wrists and no sensation from the wrist down. The skin of their hands remained bruised-looking and corpse-cold until the end of their lives. Henry had no recollection of this incident after the fact.

Relationships

Rita Corduroy

Arnold and Rita have an unhappy marriage. Rita is sometimes tempted to leave him and strike out on her own, but her own opinions on a woman's duty to her husband prevent her from doing so. She did not ignore Arnold's abuse of Henry, but rather encouraged it by asking Henry to do things she knew Arnold would disapprove of.

Henry Corduroy

Arnold has an extremely strained relationship with his son. They rarely talk on the phone, and Henry has a fear of treating his children as his father treated him.

Wendy Corduroy

Wendy dislikes nearly all of her uncles. However, her Uncle Arnold is the only one she's actually afraid of.

Trivia

• Arnold has seven brothers and one sister. He is the third youngest. His siblings' names are Little Al, Curtis, John, Rene, Ed, Lake, Dan, and Bertina ("Bertie").
• He drives an F-450 pickup truck.
• At one point, Arnold has an ongoing affair with a waitress named Trisha.
